When Unity Changes the Outcome

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1, NIV).

Twelve lions surrounded Big Bull, the leader of a herd of water buffalo.
Twelve lions held him down.
Twelve lions prepared for a feast.

At first, the herd appeared to walk away. They turned their backs, unable to watch the death of their leader.

Then they turned as one, approached as one, and acted as one force. The pride of lions that had stalled the herd for days backed away, abandoned the meal that had been within their grasp, and returned to the shadows – hungry.

What made the difference?

The entire herd acted in harmony for the good of one of their own.

As I watched this on a nature programme, I was struck by the sheer tenacity of the herd as they fought a common enemy to save just one life. And I wondered what our society would look like if we did the same.

Imagine a community fighting for the marriage of a young couple on the verge of divorce, or a group of mothers rallying around one who is struggling with her wayward son.

Imagine a group of men becoming consistent mentors to a gang of teenage boys, or a group of young people standing up for the rights of the aged.

What a different world we would live in if we looked out for one another and came together for the good of others.

Reflection:

·       How do I treat the people around me who are good to me?

·       How does this differ from how I treat those who challenge me?

·       What can I do to live together in unity with others, especially within our church congregations?

Prayer:

Father, may we always look out for the needs of others, provide help and support where needed, and live together in unity.

Amen.
